November 29th 2002 - 3rd Anniversary
Well after a fair sized gap since making my last trip down South, I felt the third anniversary was as good as time as any to get back down to what I've always considered to be one of the most enjoyable soul nights that I've been to. After the usual North Wales pick up confusion (I've done this 101+ times but still take wrong turnings and get delays and so on), all soulies were picked up and I was substituted as driver, we were off! I slept most of way and have no idea how (or even if it was legal!), but just to say it was most welcome to complete the journey in record time, as we managed to get from the Springfield Hotel (DMSC home base) to the Dome in Tuffnel Park in 3 and a half hours...on a Friday night and with a stop! Gotta say thanks to the CSC promoters/door staff as they were expecting us, and we got a good welcome with, "that monkey lot is here", along with the latest status symbol for the discerning soul types, the CSC anniversary key-ring!
Through the doors and up the stairs I immediately noticed a change in that the cloakroom had gone, which was a bit discerning, as my better half, Sue, had spent two years doing the coats there (a few funny stories could be told!). The familiar sight of Nick Brown dishing out flyers for Scenesville then greeted us just before entering the main hall which was fairly packed already with a good vibe goingtime to hit bar!
Many faces I hadn't seen for a while were there, so it was a night of catching up on all the gossip etc. Crowd wise, the official figure was 400+ and as already said they created a great atmosphere, and as always the CSC attract a wide range of age groups, which is always refreshing. Met up with people I knew from all over the place, including Cambridge, the Midlands, NorthWest, Scotland, Yorkshire, Holyhead, and Finland! The record dealer's room was busy with many familiar faces, including Andy Dyson who said he had been busy, as was an American seller! As always my own vinyl account was in the red, so I avoided the temptation of browsing! Jo Wallace was doing the new cloakroom which is now located in the alcove in the record bar, and we had a quick chat about the Chatham/Medway soul scene of the early 80s.
Sounds wise - not sure how much or indeed if the format had changed since my last visit, and being an anniversary it was probably going to be a bit different from the norm, but I was glad to hear some familiar CSC sounds, along with fair few new "unfamilars", a lot more 70s and some classy revivals! Mick Smith was main DJ guest along with Pete Hulatt. The night passed by dead quick and before I knew it the lights went on for the finale at this point I spotted more people who I had to catch up with! Greg eventually finished the night with, "that's it, no more, sorry no more, no that's it oh, ok then!" and then quickly put yet another disc on the decks, letting loose The Kindly Shepherds monster, which worked really well and was a great way to underline the night!
Back up the motorways of England back to the Homeland, arriving at 7 am with travel time taken up with vinyl trivia, stories, solving all the world problems and all that, followed by an impromptu after-event session as we had to wait to hand in hire car!
My view on the night was that it was well enjoyable, and that it had been too long since last I was there! Once again I'd had a great old time! The rest of the DMSC all thought the same and were impressed with the sounds, the feel of place and the enthusiasm of everyone, and were glad that they had risked the perils of putting their lives in hands of the "DMSC travel division!"
Three years on from that first memorable night, I'm glad to report that the CSC lot are still going strong, and I'm sure that come the same time next year we'll be saying just the same again! For now, all I will say is big thanks for the last 3 years to all at the CSC, both past and present including one of the original promoters, Matt.J.
Often read people saying how this scene is crying out for new blood, freshness and all that, well the CSC have been doing that for 3+ years now, continually attracting fresh young soul fans, consist of a young (compared to other events - evil grin!) DJ/promotion set up, have fresh ideas, and best of all they deliver a quality rare soul, punter friendly event, as proved by last night! Hats off to them, in fact throw the things up in air!!!

I was really looking forward to this year’s trip as my recollection from the previous year was full of fond memories. I stepped from the train at 13:45 Thursday afternoon and was greeted by an incoherent drunk Scotsman who asked the question, "Who are the best, the Spice girls or the Beatles?" After lecturing him about the evils of mainstream pop and how the Beatles were very similar to the Spice Girls in 'relative' terms I noticed a glazed expression in his eyes that promised me an early exit from this life. I swiftly left his aura and moved next to a cackling prostitute, who also appeared to have alcohol as her best friend. Then after witnessing two schoolgirls scratch one another's eyes out to the entrance of the tube (entertainment laid on no doubt), David Flynn picked me up. I looked at him in the passenger seat and it took me a whole minute to realise he was not in a remote controlled vehicle, and it was indeed, a left hand drive.
After David paid a million pounds for two record middles we met Greg, Stuart (my host) Dave Edwards and enjoyed an evening of alcohol and bad jokes in Soho. Onto the curry house to meet up with Nick Brown, where we had a curry, it was great. Onto Stuart’s apartment, an adequate sized bedroom awaited me, plus lots of rare plastic to smell, more beer and an inadequate 3 hours sleep followed. The next day was spent regretting the evening before and questioning the contents of the curry. The local paper rather worryingly ran the headline "Cor blimey, two horses go missing near Stuart’s house, like!”
The Dome fast approached and the buzz about the evening was fantastic. After forcing down pie and mash and sitting next to that "Changing Rooms" bloke who wears leather trousers (according to Stuart) we left for the evening’s entertainment. The place was rocking and the music great. There was a good mix of DJ's who had their own styles and I think this worked very well. I would find it difficult to have a negative slant on the place because of my subjective experience with the guys who are involved there but genuinely could not fault it.
Friendly people, great dancing, hairy handed foreigners, exotic woman, lively record bar and a fluent wooden floor. Too many top tunes to rant about, Greg’s Lemco 45 did me in with its extraordinary Hammond organ
grinding out. Always a pleasure to hear Flynn's Soul Inc. played out and Alan pleasantly surprised with a great Chuck Jackson LP track. Best spin for me was the Jokers on Sko-field but it was refreshing to hear some
great crossover and seventies tracks. I think Mick span a few and it worked really well. Top night, top weekend and a smile as broad as the Thames accompanied me back to the frozen north. Thanks lads!
